Bill Nelson, Saleroom Manager, writes about his interactions with local groups keen to discover more about the world of online auctions.

“We are so fortunate to live in an area of such natural beauty. Wherever we go, there are picture postcard scenes from Morecambe Bay with views of Arnside and Grange, to the rugged beauty of the Lakeland fells, to the verdant Lune Valley. What unites these diverse landscapes is the kind hospitality of the people who live in the area.

“Talking to groups in the area from Blackpool to Carlisle about 1818 Auctioneers and how the auction works, highlights how privileged we are to live and work where we do. There is nothing better than having a brew after a presentation, especially when you’re asked interesting questions about the person’s items.

“Even better is when we have tours around the auction house, with people who have been to a talk, this allows them to see how it all works. It also stirs memories and nostalgia in those of a particular age group. An auction house deals with many eras of history, finding new homes for preloved items and it’s these items that can be the starting point of a great conversation once a memory has been awoken.

“We are so lucky, doing the best job in the world, in this glorious area surrounded by such grand folk who like a good craic. In the past few weeks, I’ve talked to four classes of primary school children in Luton via Skype, the Westmorland Law Society and a Group of ladies in Poulton. In the next few weeks, we have a tour of 1818 and two talks to WI groups. Audiences who are as varied as our landscape, but all pulled together by having a brew and a good craic.”
