We are delighted to announce the newest addition to our expert team: Ralph Sutton, a highly respected coin valuer and Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society.
Ralph is an accredited numismatist who brings with him a passion for history and an impressive breadth of knowledge in British and World currencies.
Ralph’s appointment strengthens our well-established Collectable Coins and Banknotes department, whose successes include:
- In May 2018, we sold 194 lots of modern silver and gold coins—including Kangaroo, Panda, Maple Leaf, an Elizabeth I sixpence and a 1877 half-crown, raising a total of £78,000.
- Our May 2024 auction featured 193 lots, of which 189 sold around or above their estimates, including a 1797 Draped Bust U.S. Half Dime, which attracted 74 bids and made £4,550.
- Later that year (October 2024), our specialist sale of early Great Britain silver coins saw a 1685 James II shilling selling for £380 and a 1905 Edward VII half-crown fetching £310.
- Our first coin auction of 2025 (February) set a new record for a single sale, including an 1821 George IV silver crown in near-‘Extremely Fine’ condition that sold for £560, and a 1976 Malaysian 500 Ringgit gold coin realised £1,700.
Commenting on the appointment, Bill Nelson, Saleroom Manager, said:
“Ralph’s reputation in the numismatic community and his scholarly approach to currency valuation make him a perfect fit for our team. We are excited to welcome him aboard and offer our clients even more depth of expertise in this fascinating field.”
Ralph will be available for coin and banknote valuations every Tuesday at our saleroom. You are invited to book an appointment and bring your collections for expert insight and guidance.
